Background of Vintage Duck Decoys

While many hunters still rely on the use of decoys to lure their game into range, they're unaware of the history them. Duck decoys have a rich history dating back thousands of years. Over that time, much has changed with the design and construction of them, yet their main purpose remains the same - to resemble a duck or other type of bird with as much realism as possible.

The Smithsonian Institution is home to dozens of vintage duck decoys from a wide range of date periods and different carvers. I recommend anyone whose interested in collecting vintage decoys to take a stroll through their exhibit for a chance to see some of these amazing artifacts. While they may be hundreds of years ago, they were constructed with such precision and detail.

Vintage Decoy Warnings

Unfortunately where there are rare collectibles there are people trying to sell fakes. Lets hope you never run into this problem during your days as a decoy collector, but you should still know how to tell if a vintage decoy is authentic or not.

With some fakes, it's easy to tell they aren't authentic. They will look smooth to the touch with even wear throughout their body. On the other hand, there are also fakes which can easily fool most novice collectors. The best thing a potential customer can do to protect them from purchasing a fake is to try and find out the who, what and where of the decoy. Ask the seller about it and look for documentation it may have. If it's done by a famous carver, then it's likely to have some sort of signature on the decoy. Of course another option you consider is to have a professional inspect the vintage decoy.
