Male American WigeonWigeon Duck Information

The American Wigeon (Anas americana) is a dabbling duck species found primarily in North American wetlands. They are most easily identified by their distinct small white bill featuring a black tip, which both the male and females possess. Both the male and females also possess a white under belly that's highly visible when the Wigeons are flying overhead. Like most other duck species, though, male Wigeons typically possess brighter, more vibrant colors. Running from their eyes to the back of their neck, male Wigeons have a strip of emerald green feathers that stick out to help them attract females during the mating season. In addition, male Wigeons also feature a combination of white and black feathers around their rear and tail area.

In terms of size, the American Wigeon is a medium-sized duck with an average length of 20 inches and wingspan of 24 inches. Depending on the size and gender (males weigh slightly more), Wigeons typically weigh around one and a half pounds.

Although they don't dive down completely underwater, Wigeons do in fact stick their head below the surface to acquire food. Their diet consists of what's available to them in their surroundings, but some of the most common food foraged by Wigeons is grass, wheat, grains, lettuce and other plant-based vegetation. Because they don't usually don't feed on fish or other aquatic wildlife, Wigeons can live on dry land without having access to ponds or other wet lands.

As a result of their healthy population numbers, Wigeons are one of the most commonly hunted ducks in North America.

Decoy collectors can also benefit from having Wigeon duck decoys in their collection. If you prefer collecting decoys rather than using them as a hunting tool, you should consider picking up a couple Wigeon decoys featured here on our site. There's no denying the fact that Wigeons are one of the most attractive species of dabbling ducks, or any ducks for that matter, so why not take advantage of this by adding some decoys to your collection? Even if you're a beginner who doesn't have a ton of money to spend on rare or antique duck decoys, you can still pick up some beautiful specimens of Wigeon decoys for moderately low prices if you know where to look.

If you're looking for Wigeon decoys to add to your collection, make sure they feature a vibrant paint job with little-to-no wear. Some of the higher-quality Wigeon decoys are simply stunning to look at with their bright and vibrant colors painted on them. Of course you can expect some of the older decoys to have some wear on their paint. In this case, you can choose to either accept the natural wear as a unique feature of their old age, or you can choose to give it a fresh coat of paint. Ultimately, this is a personal decision that only you can make, but I recommend keeping the original paint if it's an older decoy.
