Benefits of Using Wooden DecoysWooden Duck Decoys

Duck decoys are made in a wide variety of materials. Some of the earliest carved decoys were constructed using entire blocks of solid wood. This allowed the carver to shape and model the decoy into however they wish. Another benefit to choosing wood to construct your decoys out of is the fact that wood holds paint very well.

Today, many experienced duck hunters still choose wooden decoys as their material of choice for creating a decoy spread. One of the reasons for this is that wooden decoys don't reflect the suns light like plastic ones do. Depending on where your spread is setup and the time of day you're hunting, this might not be an issue, but if the sun hits your decoys at just the right angle it can cause them to emit a shiny reflection alerting the ducks above.

As far as collectible decoys, wooden ones are the most widespread and valued the highest. There are several famous decoy carvers who spent much of their life perfecting the art of carving decoys out of wood.

Negatives of Wooden Decoys

Of course there are negatives to using decoys constructed entirely out of wood. One of their main pitfalls is their ease of being damaged. While they may be able to take some drops and throws on the ground, they can't withstand scrapes or hard hits. And no matter how hard you try to prevent it, your decoys will take a beating over the season.

You may also find that because of their heavy weight, wooden decoys don't generate as much movement in the water as other types may. If you're hunting on a windy day, then it's likely this wont be a problem, as they should still be swaying pretty heavily.

When you've got to carry a few dozen decoys to your hunting, you may find wooden ones to be a considerable amount heavier than cork or foam. Even with a few hunting buddies it can be difficult to carry this many wooden decoys. One way to get around this problem is to bring a spread of decoys that are both heavy and lightweight.
